The Finer Things About Working from Home

Desk Essentials: Founder of a Digital Marketing Agency

While there’s no place I’d rather be than at the helm of my online marketing agency, it can be incredibly demanding at times. Working in a house with three children and managing my team remotely doesn’t make things any easier. I rely on an organized set of tools  and equipment at my desk to keep me focused and efficient. Here are a few tools that I use in my home office to polish my professional efforts and stay on track throughout the workday.

Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT-770-PRO

A high-quality pair of headphones coupled with the right playlist keeps me focused for hours on end. I use Beyerdynamic DT-770-PRO headphones for an immersive music experience. It gives me a clear and deep bass and detailed highs. Long workdays at home call for comfortable headphones, and it doesn’t get much better than the soft-padded headband and soft-skin ear pads on these phones.

Writing Accessories: Field Notes Memo Books + Palomino Blackwing 602s

While we use Asana as a team, I actually prefer to keep an additional to-do list in my notebook. I find there’s no better way to keep track of things than with a pencil and paper.

I keep a Field Notes memo book with me at all times. These books hold strong for weeks on end in my pocket and have a clean, simple design.

Palomino Blackwing 602 is my pencil of choice. It’s the smoothest pencil I’ve ever used, which is great when I’m fleshing out ideas.

Headset: Plantronics Voyager Legend UC

Working from home means lots of calls and video conferences. If I didn’t have a good headset, my clients wouldn’t be too happy to speak with me. Thankfully, my Plantronics Voyager Legend UC gets the job done, and then some.

Not only does this bluetooth set feature noise-cancelling technology, but the Voyager also allows me to switch between devices, like my computer, phone and tablet. One of my favorite things about it is its Smart Sensor, which automatically senses when I put on the headset and then answers the call without me having to push a button.

This version of the headset also comes with a bluetooth USB adapter and portable charging case, which is perfect for when I’m on the road to get to a meeting.

Personal Assistant: Amazon Echo

I use the Amazon Echo to take care of small, basic tasks while I’m at my desk, like these:

  • Check what’s on the calendar for the day.
  • Add tasks to my to-do list and cross tasks off.
  • Choose a new restaurant to take clients or team members to.
  • Ask about traffic before I head out to meet with clients.
  • Turn on music.
  • Give me a quick answer to a question.
  • Order stuff.

Display: Dell Ultrasharp 25” Monitor

Whether I’m working on a website design or building out a presentation, the Dell Ultrasharp 25” Monitor shows me everything I’m doing in ultra-fine detail. Not only does it make everything look pretty, but I can also tilt, swivel and pivot the screen to fit my needs. I use a dual monitor setup for better efficiency.

External Hard Drive: G-Technology G-RAID

Since my work computer is also my home computer, I need places to store the stuff I don’t use every day. The G-Raid is my trusty vault for all of my dusty digital items. It supports multi-stream XDCAM HD, HDV, DVCPro HD, uncompressed SD workflows, and ProRes 422. It also features high-performance Thunderbolt interface technology.

Home Office Chair: Aeron Chairs

It’s amazing how much a comfortable office chair can help keep you focused. I haven’t found a better chair than Aeron Chairs. Each Aeron chair features a breathable, woven suspension membrane to avoid heat building up and pressure points. Once you sit in one of these, you’ll see why it’s on my list.
